Earlier this month three Lambeth MPs came to visit the foodbank warehouse. Florence Eshalomi (Labour, Vauxhall and Camberwell Green), Bell Ribeiro-Addy (Labour, Chair of the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee, Clapham and Brixton Hill), and Helen Hayes (Labour, Dulwich and West Norwood) met with Elizabeth Maytom and Sarah Noles (local engagement officer based in Waterloo) to discuss their priorities within the new government and how they can support the fight to end the need for foodbanks both in Lambeth and on a national scale.
They learnt more about the Trussell Trust Guarantee our Essentials campaign and our calls for a protected minimum floor in Universal Credit to stop deductions and sanctions pulling the lowest incomes into destitution. They also agreed to write to Rachel Reeves to ensure that Local Housing Allowance continues to be tied to local rents and to stop plans to tighten up the Work Capability Assessment. Steve Reed (Labour, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Streatham and Croydon North) will also be visiting later on in the year.
